EFCC Arrest Of UNICAL VC Not True, Says University Administration

The University of Calabar (UNICAL), Calabar has debunked the rumours currently making rounds that the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the institution, Prof. Zana Akpagu was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday over allegations that points at double pension deductions and non-payment of contractors.

The varsity administration through the Chairman, Board of Media and Community Relation, Dr. Joseph Ekpang told Calabar Reporters correspondent on phone that the rumours is fake, and that the EFCC has never approached the VC of the institution. 

According to the information gathered by Calabar Reporters, a source whose name remains anonymous said the VC was in EFCC’s net for closed to 24 hours over allegations of double pension deductions, non payment of monies acrueable to contractors after due award and release of funds, lack of due process in award of contracts.

The source added that, the procurement unit in University of Calabar is now domiciled in the Vice Chancellor’s office and the VC arrogating himself the singular right to award contracts and determine payment of contractors.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ekpang said, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Akpagu is not the one that authorises pension deductions, neither does he involved in awarding and paying contractors. His words: “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission matter is not true. Nobody was invited to the EFCC because of pension deductions. It is not the VC that authorised that.

“Pension is a Federal Government policy, that whosoever is employed should contributes to their own pension; that’s what all Federal workers are doing. So, that cannot result to anybody inflicting any deductions.

“For anything concerning contractors, the VC is not the one that awards contracts, it is the Council that does. And two weeks ago, the Council met with the contractors and they’re being mobilised to site and they are currently working.” Dr. Ekpang said.
