What Are The Basic Documents A Car Should Have?

I want to know the basic documents and permit a private car should has and the issuing authority.

Most especially those things police will ask for at check point, because times without number we will be approaching a check point, and the driver/owner will be very confident about his papers, only to get to the police and started spotting out what is lacking in the papers.
